In Gatefire, steering is also aiming. Your squad runs and fires automatically, but its bullets travel straight down the lane you choose and hit the first target in their path. Moving left to grow a gate means spending less time shooting the zombies on the right. A bigger army starts with those small decisions.
Play Gatefire to try the examples in this guide. It is a free zombie gate shooter that runs in your browser on a phone or desktop. You steer a squad along a red suspension bridge, build its numbers through gates and shoot a path through the incoming horde.
Your first run: pick a lane and watch what changes
On a phone, drag left or right on the road. On desktop, use A/D or the arrow keys. The squad handles running and shooting; you decide which target receives the shots. Start with one simple goal: stand in front of a positive gate long enough to see its number increase, then pass through it.
Do not keep sweeping across the whole bridge. Each move changes your firing lane, and a target you leave unfinished stays on the road. Make one deliberate move toward a target, watch its number or health, then decide whether there is time to finish it before switching lanes.
Read the gate operation before choosing the number
The symbol matters as much as the number. An addition gate recruits a fixed number of soldiers. A multiplication gate scales the squad you already have. A FIRE RATE gate improves shooting speed rather than adding soldiers.
Here is a worked example, below the squad-size limit and with the gate values held fixed:
| Current squad | Through +9 | Through ×2 | Larger resulting squad |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 soldiers | 14 | 10 | +9 |
| 20 soldiers | 29 | 40 | ×2 |
The same pair of gates can have a different best answer after your squad grows. Before moving, compare the result for your current soldiers rather than treating every multiplier as an automatic win. The squad tops out at 80 soldiers. Once you are there, a larger recruit number cannot increase it further, and a gold FIRE RATE gate is the better pick.
The rule of thumb is simple: ×2 beats +N once your squad is bigger than N, and ×3 beats it once your squad is bigger than half of N. Try it below. Move the sliders and watch where the answer flips.
Which gate gives you more soldiers?
Through +9
Through ×2
Grey squares are the soldiers you already have, pink squares are new recruits. The squad stops at 80.
Notice how small the gap is near the crossover. With 9 soldiers, +9 and ×2 give exactly the same result, so the lane that is easier to reach without crossing the horde is the better choice.
Shoot the gate before you walk through it
An additive gate’s value is not fixed. Shots fill it, and each completed fill increases its displayed number. This works on negative additive gates too: enough shooting can turn a red loss into a positive gain. Each gate has a ceiling, so there is a point where additional shots stop improving the offer.
Division gates have a separate rescue rule. Enough fire breaks the division operation into a +1 gate, which can then grow like other addition gates. Multiplication and FIRE RATE gates do not grow through this charging rule.
Here is a squad shooting a ÷2 gate until it flips, in a short clip from our channel:
Treat that rescue as an opportunity with a deadline. A red gate is still a loss if you enter before its label changes. When the horde is already close, firing at the zombies can matter more than trying to fix an unfavourable gate. Look at what the gate says now, not what you hope it will say by the time you arrive.
Tire rewards compete for the same bullets
Tire stacks show a health number and carry a prize. Breaking a stack can give you soldiers, a weapon improvement, an airstrike or a supporting vehicle. Colliding with an unbroken stack costs soldiers.
A stack in front of your squad also receives bullets that could have reached another target in that lane. Before committing, ask whether you can finish it in the distance remaining. A half-damaged stack is not half a reward. If time runs short, moving away can protect more soldiers than staying for one more volley.
Weapons progress from Rifle through SMG, Minigun, Laser and Plasma during a stage. Watch the change in fire as well as the squad count: more soldiers are one way to get stronger, but better weapons and fire rate can also increase what the squad can handle.
Switch priorities when the horde closes in
Zombies that reach your squad take soldiers away. Walkers give you more time to prepare; runners shorten the decision window. Brutes are larger threats, armored zombies carry a shield and take half damage, bloaters split in two when they go down, and leapers jump over your bullets, so hit them while they are on the ground. A lane that was useful for gate charging a moment ago can become the lane you need to clear immediately.
Boss encounters make the same tradeoff harder to ignore. Build strength on the approach, then put sustained fire into the threat instead of chasing every reward. Against a boss that spawns more zombies, watch the nearby enemies as well as the large health bar. An impressive army still needs a clear road.
Spend coins on the weakness you can see
Between stages, Power increases bullet damage, Rate improves firing speed and Recruits adds a starting soldier. These upgrades carry forward. Guns and vehicles won from tire stacks belong to the current stage, so do not confuse a temporary reward with your permanent starting strength.
If you keep reaching tire stacks without breaking them, look at damage and firing speed. If the squad becomes fragile early, an extra starting recruit may give you more room to recover. Upgrade the problem that ends your run rather than buying solely to make one number bigger.
Try this on your next run
Choose a positive gate, hold its lane and watch the label grow. At the next choice, compare an addition with a multiplier using your current squad. Then notice the moment you need to stop investing in a gate and start clearing zombies. Those three decisions explain most of the bridge.
Gatefire belongs to a wider family of games where the weapons fire by themselves and your job is choosing where to stand. Our list of games like Vampire Survivors covers the others on the site.
Start a Gatefire run and try to finish with a stronger squad through better choices. The challenge is readable with one finger: where you stand determines what you shoot, and what you shoot determines what you can safely pass.
