Upgrade games give you something to spend what you earn on: a faster car, a bigger gun, a taller tower, a wider net. Each purchase changes how the next round plays, so the game is as much about what to buy as about how to play.
The upgrade tree is the real content. Choosing between two improvements, saving for the expensive one, noticing that a cheap upgrade quietly makes a hard level easy: that is where most of the thinking happens, and it is what pulls players back for one more round.
