Frequently asked questions
How do I play Ashen Toll?
Walk with W, A, S and D and look around with the mouse (the arrow keys turn too). Shift runs and Space jumps. Hold the right mouse button to aim, then click the left button to fire, and hold it to keep shooting. E kicks, R reloads, Q swaps weapons once the Pedlar has sold you a second one, Tab opens your case and P pauses. On a phone it plays like most mobile shooters: the left stick walks (push it past its ring to run), the JUMP button jumps, dragging the right side of the screen looks around, AIM raises the gun and FIRE shoots.
Can I move while aiming?
Yes, but only at a slow walk, and your aim sways while you move. Stand still and it settles within half a second. Backing away while you shoot keeps a crowd off you for a moment; stopping gives you the clean head or leg shot. Every fight is that choice.
How do the villagers attack?
On the pass road and in the square they only shuffle towards you. From the farm on they run to close the distance, spread out to come at you from the sides, and one at a time a hollow crouches, screams and lunges. Shoot it in the head or leg during the scream to stop the lunge. Up to three can swing at you at once, and from the lake on they dodge out of a steady aim.
What does the kick do?
Shoot a hollow in the leg or the head and it staggers for a moment. Walk up and kick it while it does, and the kick knocks down every enemy standing around it. Kicking a staggered warden also tears its door shield away. When you are out of ammunition the kick still works.
What happens when I die?
You wake at the last lantern you lit, with the case you had there. If you have no pistol rounds left you get a spare clip, so you are never stuck. An optional short video can instead revive you on the spot once per area.
Is Ashen Toll gory?
No. There is no blood: enemies crack and crumble into grey ash with amber embers when they fall. The horror comes from fog, darkness, sound and crowds, not from gore.
Do I need to download anything or pay?
No. Ashen Toll runs directly in the browser on desktops, tablets and phones, with no download and no account. It is free, nothing is ever bought with real money, and your progress stays on your own device.
