On a computer, use the arrow keys or WASD to change direction. On a phone or tablet, swipe in the direction you want to turn. The snake moves continuously and cannot stop or reverse into itself.

The run ends when the snake hits a wall or collides with its own body. Since the snake grows every time it eats, the arena effectively shrinks as you score, and avoiding your own tail becomes the main challenge.

Hug the edges of the arena rather than cutting through the middle, and always leave yourself a way out before entering a tight space. Late in a run it is often better to ignore a pellet for a few seconds and unwind your shape than to chase it into a dead end.
